Big Win for Those Struggling with Dementia and Their Families

By Justice For Our Parents

Patient Rights

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the Hospital Patient Visitation Rights Act (AB 960) into law—a vital step forward for the rights of people living with dementia and other cognitive impairments.

Starting January 1, 2026, this new legislation ensures that patients with dementia or other cognitive impairments have the right to designate a friend, family member, or caregiver to be by their side while hospitalized. No more forced isolation. No more confusion from unfamiliar faces.

This progress was made possible by Assemblymember Robert Garcia (D–Long Beach), a true advocate for Alzheimer’s and dementia families, with support from Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, Alzheimer’s Orange County, and Alzheimer’s San Diego.
