Critical To-Dos Before Visiting an Assissted Living Facility for Your Loved One

By Justice For Our Parents

Assessment / Monitoring Issues

Doing more than a personal visit is critical before choosing a nursing home or assisted living facility. To minimize potential elder abuse or neglect, check the facility's inspection history, look for past violations, and request staff and medical care credentials.

You can also:

  • Review reports and complaints submitted to the California Department of Social Services or California Department of Public Health.
  • Compare facilities on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website.
  • Speak to trusted providers, like physicians, physical therapists, and hospice agencies.
  • Meet with the Director of Nursing and ask about staffing ratios and training.

Don't let a preplanned tour showcasing the best of a care facility cover up any potential red flags. A little research now can prevent major harm later. Justice For Our Parents encourages families to investigate thoroughly—your loved one's safety depends on it.
