Here’s What You Should Know About Elder Abuse Laws In California

By Justice For Our Parents

Did you know California has some of the strongest laws to protect seniors from abuse? Here’s what you should know about elder abuse laws in the Golden State.

Who is Protected?
Under California law, elder abuse protections apply to anyone 65 years or older, and/or dependent adults ages 18 to 64 with physical or mental limitations.

What Qualifies as Abuse?

  • Physical Abuse: Hitting, restraining, or other harm
  • Neglect: Failing to provide proper care, food, or medical attention
  • Financial Exploitation: Stealing, coercing, or misusing funds
  • Emotional Abuse: Intimidation, isolation, or verbal threats

What Are the Penalties?
Perpetrators of elder abuse can face criminal charges, civil penalties, and lawsuits for damages, with care facilities held accountable for negligence or unsafe conditions.

What Should You Do?
If you suspect elder abuse, report it immediately to Adult Protective Services (APS) or local law enforcement.
