How California’s CARE Court Expansion Could Improve Access to Care for Vulnerable Older Adults

By Justice For Our Parents

Los Angeles Elder Care Facilities

California continues to expand its Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Court program, which was created to help connect people living with serious mental illness to treatment and support services through a court-supervised process. The program has sparked important conversations about balancing safety, personal autonomy, treatment access, and family support.

While CARE Court was not designed specifically for older adults, efforts to improve access to behavioral health services may also benefit seniors experiencing mental illness and help families navigate complex care systems. For older adults living with mental illness, better coordination and earlier intervention can help reduce barriers to care and provide caregivers with additional support. Expanding access to services while preserving dignity and independence remains an important part of protecting vulnerable populations.
